The Zenith Daytona Rolex
Reference Numbers:
The Zenith Rolex is a Rolex Daytona with the reference number 16520 for the most well known model. Other references include the 16523, 16528, 16518, and 16519.
Production Years:
The Rolex Zenith was first released in 1988 and would be produced in several variations for twelve years.
Defining Features:
The Rolex Zenith Daytona has either a white or black dial with contrasting sub-dials. The movement used in Zenith Rolexes was the Zenith El Primero Calibre, which Rolex would make several adjustments to.
Fans of the Rolex Daytona know what a legendary watch it is, but the use of the Zenith movement is certainly a lesser-known aspect of the production of these watches. Rolex would eventually move on to an in-house calibre for these timepieces, but not initially. That makes these watches a unique anomaly in the Rolex lineup.
About the Zenith Rolex
The Rolex Zenith Daytona derives its nickname from the Zenith El Primero calibre that powers the watch. Though people may be used to Rolex creating all of their watch components in-house, they have used third-party movements in the past. Even so, Rolex modified these movements to Rolex precision requirements.
Before the release of the Zenith Daytona, Rolex was producing the Cosmograph Daytona. This Rolex was equipped with a manual-winding movement provided by Valjoux. As manual-winding movements fell out of style, Rolex needed to produce a Daytona that would adhere to the latest trends in the luxury watch world. Thus, they used the Zenith movement to create their first self-winding Daytona.
