The Rolex Fat Lady was the first GMT-Master II. The original GMT-Master was an innovative addition to the Rolex catalouge and the Rolex Fat Lady iterated on this successful design. The GMT-Master II would have a thicker case, a wider bezel, and larger crowns. The GMT-Master II would also introduce the iconic red and black coloured bezel.
This would also mark the first occasion where Rolex would use sapphire crystals for their timepieces, along with 18kt white gold for the hour markers. The Rolex GMT-Master II also included the innovative feature to set the center hour hand independently from the minute and seconds hand. This made the time zone feature introduced by the GMT-Master even more intuitive. Instead of displaying dual time zones, the GMT-Master II could display three.
About the Fat Lady Rolex
To create the triple time-zone display, Rolex needed to develop a new movement in the form of the calibre 3085. This would cause the Rolex to be heavier along with making the case bigger and the bezel wider. True to form, Rolex would take this design obstacle and make it an iconic feature. The weighty appearance of this Rolex would be a hit amongst watch enthusiasts and earn it the nickname “Fat Lady.”
Other nicknames would succeed the “Fat Lady” moniker. The watch is sometimes referred to as the “Sophia Loren,” which references an Italian actress. It also is often called the Rolex “Coke” due to the fact it shares the same colour scheme as the soft drink company.
