The 1960s

The style of the sixties was marked by a wave of fluorescent colours, rounded shapes and a love for abstraction. The sixties’ rebellious approach to aesthetics had seeped its way into the world of watches. Patek Phillipe collaborated with Gilbert Albert to create the “Asymmetric” collection. This birthed a series of watches that broke away from the conventional design philosophy of the time. The Asymmetric watches were distinguished by their unique and unconventional case shapes, showcasing Patek Philippe’s extraordinary craftsmanship and an astute ability to align with the evolving preferences of the era.

The connection between fashion and cinema became increasingly prominent, with numerous movie stars showcasing specific watch models, thereby boosting their popularity. A notable example is the Rolex Submariner, which gained fame through its association with Sean Connery in the James Bond films from 1962 to 1967.

A defining moment in history occurred when the first humans landed on the moon. The event was not only a milestone for science and space exploration but also marked a significant chapter in the world of horology. Accompanying Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on this historic mission was the Omega Speedmaster. Specially designed to withstand the extreme conditions of space, it was meticulously engineered for a zero-gravity environment, the highly-resistant Hesalite crystal that was used, would ensure that in the case of breakage, a thousand pieces would not be  in the air.
