Model Reference
When TUDOR released the Black Bay Fifty Eight 925 79010SG in 2021, it was not simply another dial colour for the existing Fifty Eight. The surprise was the metal. Stainless steel had long been the natural choice for TUDOR diving watches, yet this model arrived with a case made from 925 silver.
That choice made the 79010SG unusual from the beginning. Silver had not previously been used by TUDOR for a divers’ watch, and the brand went further by fitting a transparent caseback, another first for a TUDOR diver at the time.
The watch still belonged unmistakably to the Black Bay Fifty Eight family. Its 39mm dimensions continued the smaller proportions that had helped establish the Fifty Eight as a separate part of the Black Bay range. The name itself refers to 1958, the year TUDOR introduced reference 7924, an important early diving watch in the brand's history.
The 79010SG therefore arrived with familiar Black Bay proportions but in a form TUDOR had not previously attempted.
Pick up the 79010SG and the first thing to understand is that the case is not intended to imitate stainless steel. TUDOR gave the silver a satin finish, and its warmer appearance works with the taupe colours used elsewhere on the watch.
The dial is also taupe, as is the aluminium insert in the rotating bezel. Instead of introducing a strong contrasting colour, TUDOR kept the watch within a narrow range of earthy shades. The familiar Snowflake hands stand out clearly against the dial, while large hour markers make the time easy to read. Luminous material is applied to both.
There is no date aperture squeezed between the hour markers. The dial deals only with hours, minutes and seconds, leaving the layout open and balanced.
The 39mm case is topped by a domed sapphire crystal. Around it sits a unidirectional bezel marked with a 60 minute diving scale. The crown screws into the case, and TUDOR rates the watch to 200 metres of water resistance.
TUDOR did not produce a matching silver bracelet for this model. Buyers could instead choose between brown grained leather and a taupe Jacquard fabric strap. Even the buckle received attention, with TUDOR making it from the same 925 silver used for the case.
There is an interesting contradiction at the centre of the 79010SG. Silver is a precious metal that people often associate with decorative objects, yet TUDOR used it for a watch descended from practical diving instruments.
The company did not soften the underlying Black Bay specifications to accommodate the material. The rotating bezel still measures elapsed time. The screw down crown helps protect the case against water, and the 200 metre depth rating remains more than a cosmetic reference to diving.
What silver changes is how the watch ages. Stainless steel generally keeps the same basic colour as it picks up scratches and marks. Silver can alter in tone as it reacts with its surroundings. That means a 79010SG that has been worn regularly can develop a surface appearance that would not occur in exactly the same way on the steel Black Bay Fifty Eight.
TUDOR made another unconventional decision on the back. Instead of hiding the movement beneath solid metal, sapphire crystal exposes the Manufacture Calibre MT5400.
The MT5400 is a COSC certified automatic chronometer with a silicon balance spring and approximately 70 hours of power reserve. It also has a stop seconds function for more precise time setting. There is no date mechanism because the watch was deliberately designed as a straightforward three hand model.
The movement is not there simply to provide another specification for the brochure. With the open back, it becomes something the owner can actually see, which was unusual territory for a TUDOR diving watch when the 79010SG appeared.

A pre owned 79010SG should not be judged in quite the same way as its stainless steel relatives. If the silver has changed tone, that does not automatically mean the case is in poor condition. At the same time, natural surface changes should not be confused with scratches, dents or excessive wear. Knowing the difference becomes particularly useful when comparing two watches of the same reference.
BQ Watches can examine the actual piece rather than assuming that every 79010SG of a similar age should look alike. That gives someone looking to buy the reference a clearer understanding of what has happened to the watch during its previous ownership.
Original configuration matters too. A watch may still have its taupe fabric or brown leather strap, while another may have been fitted with something different. The 925 silver buckle is another detail worth checking, along with the condition of the bezel, crystal and case.
Owners sometimes come to BQ Watches without having decided what to do with their watch. A valuation can establish where a particular 79010SG currently stands. From there, an exchange may suit someone changing the direction of a collection, while another owner may simply decide to sell. The important part is that the individual watch is assessed first, especially with a reference whose silver case can develop its own appearance over time.
