The Rolex GMT Master reference was produced from 1955 in an era where the increase in international air flights made it difficult for pilots to keep time in different zones. The GMT Master by Rolex was created as a navigational tool for professionals who travelled internationally and the watch was the official watch of several airlines including Pan American World Airways. Rolex's own historical archives recognise the stainless steel reference 6542 as the first GMT Master from 1955.
Reference 6542 was the first series of the GMT Master and had a brief production period before the reference 1675 came out in 1959. In spite of being produced for just those few years, the 6542 set the standard configuration that would characterise the entire collection, where traditional time telling was coupled with a 24 hour hand and a bi-coloured two-tone rotating bezel. Rolex itself has defined this as a method for reading two time zones in one look.
Defining Features
One of the features which makes an early stainless steel 6542 unmistakable is the presence of its famous red and blue 24 hour bezel. The Rolex archive describes the 1955 reference 6542 as featuring a red and blue Plexiglass bezel, with the official literature explaining that the two colours were meant to indicate the difference between day and night. The presence of the graduated bezel and arrow shaped 24 hour hand made it possible to keep track of another time zone alongside the traditional hour, minute and seconds hands.
It is worth noting that, unlike its successors, the reference 6542 does not feature crown guards. The date window is located at the 3 o'clock postion under the famous Rolex Cyclops magnifying glass, thus adding a calendar function to a watch which is designed primarily for travel and reading the second time zone. The 6542 ref did not limit itself to stainless steel though the Rolex archive also mentions the 18ct yellow gold 6542 with brown Plexiglass bezel insert from 1957.
One point from the supplied information should be corrected: the Rolex GMT Master 6542 was not manually wound. It belongs to Rolex's Oyster Perpetual family and uses an automatic mechanical movement. Movement specifications can differ according to the production period, so the calibre of an individual vintage 6542 should be established from the particular watch rather than reduced to one specification across the entire reference.

The 6542 makes more sense when considered as a response to the way travel was changing in the 1950's rather than simply as an early version of today's GMT Master II. Long haul aircraft were beginning to cross several times zones rapidly, creating a need for professionals to know local and reference time simultaneously. Rolex responded with a watch whose second time zone capability could be read immediately from the addtional 24 hour hand and bezel. The letters GMT refer to Greenwich Mean Time, which was particularly important to aviation as an international time reference during this period.
Its association with Pan Am is also supported directly by Rolex, but it is better described carefully rather then saying the watch was simply "commissioned by Pan Am". Rolex states that the GMT Master was developed to meet the specific needs of airline pilots and became the official watch of Pan American World Airways. That relationship was demonstrated particularly clearly in 1959, when a GMT Master was used as a navigation aid by the crew of the first non-stop Pan Am flight between New York and Moscow.
There are several visual reasons why the 6542 feels substantially different from the GMT watches that followed. The lack of crown guards, early bezel contrstruction and compact vintage portions give it an unmistakably 1950's appearance, while the red and blue division of the bezel already contains one of the most enduring visual signatures of the GMT Master family. With a watch of this age, however, the individual dial, bezel insert, case, movement and other components require careful examination because surviving pieces may have experienced servicing or component changes over many decades.
