Model Reference
Rolex unveiled the Explorer 214270 in 2010 as the successor to the 36mm Explorer 114270. The most noticeable change was its larger 39mm case—the first time the classic Explorer had been offered at this size. This gave one of Rolex’s simplest and most understated sports watches a broader, more contemporary presence on the wrist.
The reference evolved during its production run. In 2016, Rolex updated the dial and hands but retained the 214270 reference number. To distinguish between the two versions, collectors commonly refer to the earlier model as the Mark I and the updated version as the Mark II, making it easier to identify and discuss each watch on the pre-owned market.
The production of the reference stopped in 2021 after Rolex introduced reference 124270 and downsized the Explorer back to 36mm. It means that the reference 214270 spanned over an excellent eleven year period of Rolex.
There are no complications for this watch. It is known for its clean dial and the numbers 3, 6 and 9 on the dial. The timepiece also features baton and triangle hour markers. It does not have a date aperture.
The new Oystersteel case in 39mm was a major development compared to the older 39mm was a major development compared to the older 36mm Explorer. It has a smooth bezel, screw down crown, sapphire crystal, and an Oyster bracelet. The watch is water resistant up to 100 metres.
The version you choose will depend largely on the watch’s production year. Earlier models feature solid white-gold Arabic numerals without Chromalight, along with shorter hands that can appear slightly undersized against the larger dial.
In 2016, Rolex updated the design with a longer handset and added Chromalight to the 3, 6 and 9 numerals. This brought the Arabic numerals into the luminous display, improving both the dial’s balance and its legibility in low light.
The 214270 can be better understood if one considers its preceding and following models.
Before 2010, the Explorer had a 36mm diameter. And after the disappearance of the 214270 in 2021, Rolex reverted to 36mm. Thus, the 214270 is not just another discontinued Explorer reference but actually marks the years of Rolex intentionally upscaling the orginial Explorer to a bigger 39mm model.
Furthermore, its dual generation of dials also provided the collectors with unique points of interest. In most cases, Rolex changes a reference along with a design update of a watch. However, in this case, both designs retain the reference number 214270.
The MK1 is the translation of Rolex Explorer's original model in 39mm by Rolex from 2010. The first genration is highly regarded due to its original characteristics. MK2 looks much more advanced as it possesses a long hour hand and minutes hand that fit the dial perfectly where there are also three digits glowing in the darkness.
We should point out one last difference. The 214270 is not an Explorer II but an Explorer because it doesn't have a 24 hour bezel, GMT hand and a date. 214270 is simple but timekeeping, legibility and Oyster sturdiness play a crucial role in its funtionality.
