Among all the Rolex Professional models, the Explorer II 16570 had the longest lasting period in production. The model was introduced in 1989 and ceased production in 2011, which means that the lifespan of the reference is over twenty years.
This aspect needs to be considered when buying the reference. Watches produced in the 1990s and those manufactured near the end of its period of production are not alike just by having the same reference number. Rolex made certain changes throughout the production run of the watch, including the movement and the luminous substance.
Defining Features
The Explorer II does one thing in an innovative way in relation to its secondary hour hand. As it would read against the engraved 24 hour steel bezel, it can show a separate time zone. The bezel does not move, which clearly distinguishes the 16570 from other Rolex GMT Master watches.
There is also the issue of the dial. Polar white is the dial that is most typical for this watch model, with contrasting surrounds used for the hour and minute hands and hour markers to ensure clarity. Rolex also produced the 16570 with a black dial for a more traditional sports watch look.
All parts are housed inside the 40mm stainless steel Oyster case that is resistant to a depth of 100 metres and features sapphire crystal. Rolex used the Calibre 3185 movement for most of its production until they introduced the Calibre 3186 towards the end of the watch’s production run. Both movements allow adjustment of the regular hour hand independently, which comes in handy when traveling.

When it comes to the 16570, disregard the notion that the Explorer II was merely the GMT replacement for the Rolex brand. In truth, the range began with a much more specific function in mind. The 24 hour dial on the range first became a necessity for explorers who were to spend considerable time below ground where it would be hard to tell midday from midnight because of the constant darkness.
The 16570 then added a twist to the basic concept, making it applicable outside of the cave by giving the local hour hand independent adjustment capacity while retaining the basic Explorer II style and the fixed steel bezel. It was not the most obvious sports watch by Rolex to get.
There was the Submariner with diving, the GMT Master with aviation, and the Daytona with motor racing. The Explorer II was going its own way, which is one of the reasons why the 16570 is so unpredictable.
