Model Reference
Around 1988, the Rolex Datejust 16234 began replacing the earlier 16014. It stayed in the catalogue throughout the 1990s before being phased out in the early 2000s.
This was a period of gradual change for Datejust. The familiar 36mm format wasn't abandoned, but Rolex was bringing newer mechanics and materials into a design that buyers already knew well. The 16234 remained part of that generation for well over a decade.
This 16234 could easily be mistaken for an all steel Datejust except for the bezel. This bezel is made of 18ct white gold providing a touch of luxury to the watch but without the stark color contrast associated with yellow gold bezels. The balance of this 36mm Oyster case is made out of stainless steel.
Nevertheless, the acrylic crystal has been replaced with a sapphire crystal which is more resistant to damage while maintaining the three o'clock mark Cyclops magnifier. The watch’s automatic movement is Calibre 3135 featuring both quick set date and 48 hours power reserve.
But the configurations themselves are varied as well. For example, if one pairs a silver dial with the Jubilee bracelet, then this reference gets back the classic Datejust look. Alternatively, one can pair the Oyster bracelet with either blue or black dial for quite different characters. And then of course, there are various white dials and hour markers to consider.
There's a specific reason why many buyers searching for something between vintage and modern Rolex watches end up choosing the 16234. If you dig into the past and look through the Datejust history, you'll see how the Rolex models of that time featured acrylic crystals and had quite another set of considerations.
However, a quick look at today’s models will make you notice the gradual changes of cases and materials. The 16234 is in the transitional period between the old and new reference numbers of Rolex watches. The watch 16234 has a typical case of 36 mm Datejust, considering its sapphire crystal and Calibre 3135, this timepiece has very little in common with older models in terms of mechanics. Besides, unlike some of the other watches by Rolex from that time period, it is a free watch with no specific dial or bracelet.

With so many dial and bracelet combinations produced, knowing what belongs on the individual watch is useful too.
