1989 marked the arrival of the Rolex Datejust 16220, with production continuing until 1996. Its relatively compact production period places the reference firmly within the five digit Datejust generation of the late 1980s and 1990s.
The 16220 followed the engine turned Datejust tradition of the earlier 16030, but belonged to a newer period of Rolex manufacturing. By this point, sapphire crystal and the Calibre 3135 had arrived, moving the Datejust further away from the construction found on older four digit references.
Defining Features
Just take a look at the dial and you will see the element that gives the 16220 its distinctiveness. Unlike other watches in this series, its bezel made of stainless steel was made by machining, not polishing like in the case of smooth bezels or fluting typical for Rolex watches.
The 36 mm Oyster case is also made of stainless steel; the dial is protected by sapphire crystal and equipped with Cyclops lens for the date at three o'clock position. The Rolex company provided a lot of options behind this crystal; traditional silver, white and black dials, and blue and salmon for those looking for something unusual. You may encounter an Oyster or Jubilee bracelet with this reference.
Calibre 3135 automatic is used for timekeeping and date indication. Quick set date adjustment and 48 hour power reserve are some of its characteristics. This caliber later became widely used in various Rolex collections for decades.

The 16220 is amongst the final Rolex Datejust watches wearing an engine turned bezel; a feature now extinct in Rolex today. This alone sets the watch apart from anything else. It does not attempt to mimic the appearance of a precious metal Datejust watch with fluted bezel, nor does it have the clean look of the smooth bezel Datejust.
Then there is the other reason why this reference watch feels different compared to its predecessor Datejust watches. Although the design is inspired by the classic 36mm size of Rolex, the owning experience is slightly more forgiving. Not only does sapphire crystal offer better scratch resistance compared to acrylic, but also the quick set date offers a small improvement over older watches. It would be fair to say the 16220 perfectly represents Rolex watches of the 1990s era.
