ZENITH introduced the DEFY Skyline 03.9300.3620/01.I001 in 2022, bringing a new direction to a name that had already been part of the manufacture's history for more than half a century. The original DEFY appeared in 1969, the same year ZENITH introduced the El Primero, but the Skyline was not designed as a reproduction of that early watch. Instead, ZENITH carried the older DEFY's angular geometry into a contemporary 41mm steel case and paired it with a new generation of the El Primero movement. Reference 03.9300.3620/01.I001 was part of the opening DEFY Skyline collection and can be identified by its silver toned dial, steel bracelet and accompanying khaki green rubber strap.
Defining Features
The silver dial is far more distinctive of this particular reference than would be implied by its description of “simple” or “minimalist.” ZENITH has adorned this with a sunburst dial pattern featuring an interlocking design inspired by the four pointed star logo of the manufacturer. This pattern varies in intensity as the light passes over the dial face, but does not remain equally prominent when viewed from any angle. The black ruthenium-plated, faceted hour markers and hands stand out on this dial and feature Super LumiNova SLN C1. There is a date window at 3 o’clock and a smaller one at 9 o’clock.
This watch takes the form of a larger 41mm steel octagonal watch case, which comes with a 12-faceted bezel as opposed to the usual circular bezel. This form flows through to the steel watch band, which is held together by a folding clasp. ZENITH has even made provision to have an easy-to-change system on the watch, such that the watch band can easily be changed without using tools. Reference 03.9300.3620/01.I001 comes with a second watch band, which is khaki green in color and has the same star design. It also comes with a screw-down crown and water resistance of up to 10 ATM.

This detail at 9 o'clock shows why ZENITH has chosen to use an El Primero mechanism for a watch without a chronograph. As a result, instead of a conventional seconds' display, the hand turns a full circle on its dial every 10 seconds. The scale separates each second into ten segments and creates a dynamic display of 1/10th of a second. It is an unusual approach to demonstrating the high frequency of the movement in terms of what you see when looking at the front side of the watch.
The automatic El Primero 3620 manufacture calibre lies behind this display. It operates at a frequency of 5 Hz, or 36,000 vibrations per hour, and is equipped with a silicon escape wheel and lever. The movement consists of 219 parts and has a power reserve of about 60 hours due to the bidirectional automatic winding system. The central display of hours and minutes is supplemented with the date at 3 o'clock. At the same time, ZENITH offers special finishing of the oscillating weight of the movement.
This arrangement gives the DEFY Skyline an unusual position among modern integrated bracelet watches. The angular steel construction may be the first thing noticed on the wrist, but the movement prevents the design from being its only point of interest. The continuously rotating 1/10th second hand provides a direct connection with the high frequency engineering for which the El Primero name is known, while the interchangeable bracelet and strap allow the appearance of the 03.9300.3620/01.I001 to be changed without altering the watch itself.
