The TUDOR Black Bay Bronze 79012M arrived in 2021 as a boutique edition, and it was not simply the existing Black Bay 58 offered in another metal. TUDOR had used bronze before, but those watches were larger and came on straps. With the 79012M, bronze was brought into the 39mm Black Bay 58 format and, more unusually, carried right through to the bracelet.
That bracelet was the real talking point when the watch appeared. Full bronze bracelets are uncommon because the metal changes as it is exposed to the environment and the wearer. TUDOR accepted that behaviour rather than trying to disguise it. The case and bracelet were intended to age together, giving a worn watch a noticeably different appearance from one that had spent most of its time in its box.
This also explains why the 79012M should not be dated to 2019. Although other Black Bay Bronze watches existed before it, this particular 39mm reference with its bronze bracelet was launched in June 2021.
Defining Features
The 79012M is one of those watches that can make more sense in person than it does from a specification sheet. Bronze has a warmer appearance than steel, and TUDOR avoided putting a strongly contrasting dial inside it. Instead, the dial moves from a darker brown around the edge towards a slightly lighter centre. The aluminium bezel insert follows a similar brown bronze colour.
There is another detail that separates the face from most Black Bay 58 models. Large Arabic numerals occupy 3, 6 and 9 o'clock. They sit alongside the familiar round and rectangular hour markers, while TUDOR's Snowflake hour hand remains immediately recognisable. There is no date window, leaving the numerals and hour markers undisturbed.
Then there is the bracelet. Its riveted construction gives it a slightly older appearance, but the clasp is thoroughly modern. TUDOR's T fit system allows the bracelet to be adjusted in small steps without taking out a link or reaching for a tool. That can be useful during an ordinary day when wrist size changes slightly with temperature.
A brown bronze Jacquard fabric strap was supplied as well. It gives the owner another way of wearing the watch, but it also means a pre-owned 79012M can have more original components to look for than the watch and bracelet alone.
About TUDOR Black Bay Bronze 79012M
Perhaps the most interesting thing about owning this reference is that keeping it completely unchanged is almost impossible. Bronze reacts to its surroundings. With regular wear, the bright tone of a relatively fresh watch gradually becomes darker and less uniform. The bracelet goes through the same process.
That should not automatically be treated as damage. Patina and physical wear are two differents things. A change in colour is part of the behaviour of bronze, whereas a deep scratch, damaged bezel or heavily marked clasp tells you something about how the watch has actually been used.
TUDOR also made an interesting decision underneath the watch. The caseback is not bronze. It is steel with a bronze coloured PVD coating. Since the bac spends long periods directly against the skin, using steel there avoids having a large bronze surface continually in contact with the wrist.
Behind that clsoed back is TUDOR's Manufacture Calibre MT 5400. It is an automatic movement with COSC chronometer certification and around 70 hours of power reserve. That gives the watch enough running time to be put down for much of a weekend without necessarily havig stopped by the time it is worn again.
Despite the unusual metal, TUDOR did not treat the 79012M as a decorative Black Bay. The crown screws down, the bezel rotates in one direction, and water resistance is rated to 200 metres. In other words, the bronze changes how the watch looks and ages, but not what TUDOR expected it to do.
