The TUDOR Black Bay 58 18K 79018V arrived in 2021, several years after the first Black Bay 58 had established the smaller 39mm format within TUDOR's diving watch collection. Rather than changing the size or adding a new complication, TUDOR took the familiar Black Bay 58 in an unexpected direction by making the case from 18 ct yellow gold.
That decision made the 79018V an important reference in its own right. Gold had appeared elsewhere in TUDOR watches, but this was the brand's first divers' watch with an entirely 18 ct yellow gold case. It also introduced an open caseback to a TUDOR diver, allowing the mechanical movement to be viewed through sapphire crystal.
The reference did not disappear after its original leather and fabric strap versions. TUDOR later expanded the 79018V with an 18 ct yellow gold bracelet, so buyers looking at this reference on the pre owned market may encounter different factory configurations depending on the age of the watch.
Defining Features
There is plenty of yellow gold here, but TUDOR avoided giving the watch a highly polished jewellery finish. The 39mm case is satin finished, which softens the appearance of the metal. The screw down crown and bezel are also made from 18 ct yellow gold, making the precious metal an integral part of the watch rather than an applied surface treatment.
Green was chosen to sit alongside the yellow gold. The domed dial uses a deep green finish, while the bezel carries a matt green anodised aluminium insert with a 60 minute diving scale. Gold coloured markings on the bezel tie it back to the case. The familiar Snowflake hour hand remains, accompanied by large luminous hour markers and central minute and seconds hands.
There is deliberately little else on the dial. The 79018V has no date window, chronograph registers or additional display. This keeps the face open and allows the green dial, gold case and characteristic Black Bay hands to do most of the visual work.
Early versions were supplied on a domed dark brown alligator strap with an 18 ct yellow gold buckle. TUDOR also included a green fabric strap with a gold coloured centre band and another yellow gold buckle.

Making a Black Bay 58 from solid gold could have turned it into a watch that only borrowed the appearance of a diver. TUDOR went the other way. The practical construction was retained even though the case material had changed considerably.
The bezel still rotates in one direction for measuring elapsed time, the crown screws into the case, and water resistance remains 200 metres. A domed sapphire crystal covers the dial. These details matter because they show that reference 79018V was developed as a functioning member of the Black Bay family rather than simply a gold version made for appearance.
Look through the back and the Manufacture Calibre MT5400 is visible. This is the correct movement for the 79018V, rather than the MT5402 used in some other Black Bay 58 references. It is a self winding mechanical calibre with a bidirectional rotor, 27 jewels and a silicon balance spring. The movement runs at 28,800 beats per hour and is officially certified as a chronometer by COSC.
Its power reserve is approximately 70 hours, so the watch can be taken off for more than two days without necessarily needing to be reset when it is worn again. A stop seconds function also allows the seconds hand to be halted while setting the time.
