Model Reference
The Rolex Cosmograph reference 6239 was launched in 1963 and thus marked the very first model of the chronograph which would later become the famous Cosmograph Daytona. The purpose of creating the watch was motor racing, so the bezel of the watch received the tachymeter scale which helped the driver calculate the average speed over a distance. The reference stayed in production throughout most of the 1960s and ceased to be produced no earlier than 1969 when the next references were designed.
The 6239 also comes from a period when the Daytona identity itself was still developing. Early watches can be found without the word “Daytona” on the dial, while the designation appeared on other versions during the reference's production. This makes production period, dial configuration and other individual characteristics particularly important when examining a pre owned 6239 rather than assuming every watch from the reference follows one fixed specification.
One of the defining features of the Rolex 6239 is its tachymetric bezel. Rolex moved the scale from the dial to the bezel when it introduced the Cosmograph in 1963, creating more separation between the scale and the three chronograph registers. The watch has approximately 36.5mm case proportions, considerably more compact than the modern 40mm Cosmograph Daytona, while pump style chronograph pushers beside the winding crown distinguish it from later Daytona references fitted with screw down pushers.
The 6239 belongs to the manually wound period of Rolex chronographs. Early watches are associated with Calibre 72B, while later pieces can be found with Calibres 722 and 722-1, meaning the movement should always be considered alongside the production period of the individual watch. Stainless steel versions are particularly familiar within vintage collecting, although the reference was also produced in gold. Dial configurations varied as well, including the distinctive exotic dials that collectors would later associate with Paul Newman. These should not be confused with standard 6239 dials, as only specific configurations qualify for the commonly used “Paul Newman Daytona” description.
What makes the 6239 particularly interesting is how different it is from the Daytona that exists today while still establishing several elements fundamental to the collection. The three register chronograph layout and external tachymetric scale are immediately familiar, yet manual winding, pump pushers and smaller case proportions give the watch the character of an early 1960s racing chronograph. Rolex's relationship with Daytona was already established by this point; the company became official timekeeper of the Daytona International Speedway in 1962, shortly before introducing its new Cosmograph for racing drivers.
Variation is also a key component to understand reference 6239. There have been variations in wording and design of the dial face, different calibres were used throughout production, and different materials of cases were offered. While some exotic dial watches gained an especially strong connection with Paul Newman, this history should not detract from the regular dial face 6239 watches, which are another crucial part of the reference. For any buyer of a vintage 6239, originality, dial face, calibre, bezel, pusher mechanism and condition of the case will tell much more about the specific piece than just the reference number.
