Rolex GMT Master II 16710 was in production for 18 years, from 1989 till 2007. This model succeeded the broader reference 16760 and stayed in production long enough to witness a number of different stages in the production of Rolex watches.
A 16710 watch produced at the start of this time can thus vary slightly from one produced in the later years. Rolex altered the luminescent materials used, the case, the bracelet and finally the movement in later years. In 2007, the reference reached the end of its lifespan with the arrival of ceramic bezel GMT Master II watches.
Defining Features
Travel was the main feature of the 16710 model. In addition to its standard hour hand, it had a second one which could show the home time while the other showed the local hour time and did not stop working. A third time zone can also be shown by rotating the 24 hour bezel.
These bezels were available in three color combinations: “Pepsi” made up of red and blue colors, “Coke” consisting of black and red colors and the all-black one. These bezels were aluminum and thus could change color because of aging and wearing even when the watches have been used for many years.
The case of the 16710 remained 40 mm in diameter and was made from stainless steel. The black dial of the watch was protected by the sapphire crystal glass while the Cyclops lens was used for the date function. Most watches were powered by the Calibre 3185 while the Calibre 3186 was used for later production of the watch.
About Rolex GMT-Master Model Number 16710
It used to be possible to walk into a Rolex store and find two versions of the GMT available. While the 16700 GMT Master still existed, there was the 16710 GMT Master II. However, when the former model was discontinued in 1999, the GMT Master II became the future of the brand thanks to its independently adjustable hour hand.
Meanwhile, the 16710 kept carrying the torch for the previous model by entering the next millennium without the increased size of the next generation as well as the ceramic bezel.
This is why the reference is in such an unusual situation right now. It has everything from the GMT Master II that buyers are looking for, yet visually it remains the watch of the era of the aluminium bezel. The Pepsi is famous for its name, the Coke does not appear anymore on the watches of the modern Rolex series, while the black GMT Master II is much more modest.
