PRE-OWNED ROLEX 16700 GMT MASTER WATCHES

Pre-Owned Rolex 16700 GMT Master Watches

Production Years:

The Rolex GMT Master 16700 appeared in 1988, but it didn't arrive as a replacement for the GMT Master II. Rolex sold the two collections alongside one another for several years. The 16700 continued the original GMT Master line, while the GMT Master II offered a more flexible way of setting the additional time zone display.

Production ended in 1999. Rolex didn't introduce another GMT Master after it, making the 16700 the final reference in the original collection and leaving the GMT Master II to carry the name forward.

Defining Features

The look that comes to mind about the 16700 model is red and blue "Pepsi" bezel. Nonetheless, there were also black bezels in production. This aluminium bezel is bi-directional and is engraved with a 24 hour scale which allows the watch to be read in conjunction with GMT hand.

It is important to know how it works. For the 16700, the usual hour hand and 24 hour hand are tied together and cannot be adjusted independently, which makes the main difference with the GMT Master II models.

The Rolex 16700 was made using a 40mm stainless steel Oyster case, Oyster bracelet and sapphire crystal, being the only original GMT Master model to have sapphire. It has automatic movement Calibre 3175 with quick set date and approximately 48 hours of power reserve.

About Rolex GMT Master Model Number 16700

The GMT Master II was already present in the Rolex catalogue by 1988. However, this does not mean that the original GMT Master was instantly taken out of circulation. On the contrary, the 16700 kept giving buyers the option of purchasing the more basic GMT for eleven additional years.

This gives the watch a unique position in Rolex history, as the 16700 is not the start of the next generation GMT Master; rather, it is the end of the original one.

There is also something attractive about the blend of past and present from the collector's point of view. While the GMT bezel and the GMT function itself hark back to the older GMT Masters, the sapphire crystal glass, Calibre 3175 and quick set date make the 16700 a far more practical version of the watch line.

About Your Query

Why Choose BQ Watches for a Pre-Owned Rolex GMT Master 16700?

A 16700 can reveal a lot through its smaller details. Bezel inserts may have faded naturally or been replaced, luminous material changed during production, and dials can differ according to age. The condition of the case and bracelet matters too, particularly on watches that have spent decades being regularly worn.

When you're looking to buy a 16700, BQ Watches can help establish what you're actually looking at and whether its details are consistent with its production period. That specialist assessment is particularly useful with a discontinued GMT reference where originality can influence collector interest.

If you already own a GMT Master, you can arrange a professional valuation to find out what it may be worth today. Should you decide to sell, our team can discuss the watch directly with you. An exchange is also available when you would rather put its value towards another Rolex.
