Rolex Submariner 16613 stayed in the Rolex catalogue from 1988 to 2009, which is over two decades of existence. It was launched together with new Submariner Date models and stayed there throughout the 1990s and the early 2000s.
A model with such a long life cycle could not have stayed without modifications. The materials used, bracelets, printing on dials, and other small details were changing, while the model number remained 16613. The retirement of 16613 in 2009 occurred while preparing the Submariner for the era of ceramic bezels.
Defining Features
Gold and a professional dive watch may seem strange in the same sentence. However, this is precisely the combination used to create the 16613 model. Rolex uses stainless steel combined with 18ct yellow gold to form the Oyster case and bracelet which the company names Yellow Rolesor. Gold elements are used in the winding crown, bezel and centre bracelet links but not in place of the steel case necessary for a durable sports watch.
Two models have faces which are very well known. Black is the colour of the dial and bezel making it a darker two toned model; blue version adds extra colours making it unique. It is still the Submariner watch designed for diving. The 40mm Oyster case is waterproof up to 300 metres depth, the bezel rotates one way only to track the dive time and luminous hour markers make it legible even in the dark. Rolex's automatic Calibre 3135 runs underneath it all. It became one of the company's longest serving movements, offering a quick set date and around 48 hours of power reserve.
