PRE-OWNED ROLEX 16610 SUBMARINER WATCHES

Pre-Owned Rolex 16610 Submariner Watches

Production Years:

The Rolex Submariner Date 16610 belongs to one of the longest running generations of the modern Submariner, entering the collection in the late 1980s and remaining in production until 2010. Its arrival coincided with an important technical period for the range: Rolex had moved the Submariner Date to 904L steel, while water resistance had increased to 300 metres by the end of the decade. Rolex now calls this steel alloy Oystersteel.

The long production history of the 16610 also implies that the watch did not look the same all its lifetime. Modifications were made regarding the dials as well as the luminescence of the hands, and in 2003 the special anniversary edition of 16610LV appeared. By 2010, this series of Submariner Date watches was succeeded by new models featuring a ceramic bezel insert.

Defining Features

With the 16610 comes a 40mm Oyster steel case with a black dial featuring a date display at 3 o'clock and Cyclops at the date. On top of the dial is a uni-directional rotating bezel with 60 minutes of time marked on it. It should be noted that unlike the ceramic bezel used in subsequent generations of the Submariner, the normal 16610 features the bezel insert made of anodised aluminum which was widely used during that time. Rolex has confirmed that the use of ceramic bezel was introduced in place of anodised aluminum one on the Submariner Date in 2010.

Water resistance of the watch is up to 300 meters which proves its status as a professional diver rather than a sporty watch with just diving aesthetics. The screw down case of the Oyster is complemented by a diving bezel and very readable hour markers which characterize all members of the Submariner line perfectly well. The Submariner Date has been rated up to 300 meters since 1979.

Inside the 16610 is the self winding Rolex Calibre 3135, which operates the central hours, minutes and seconds together with an instantaneous date display. Rolex describes the 3135 as a manufactured automatic calibre with a Parachrom hairspring designed for increased resistance to shocks and temperature variations.

About Rolex Submariner Model Number 16610

Much of the character of the 16610 comes from proportions that changed noticeably with the generation that followed it. Its 40mm case uses comparatively narrower lugs and crown guards, giving the watch a slimmer profile than the broader case architecture introduced on later six digit Submariners. The aluminium bezel also has a different surface quality from modern ceramic, reinforcing the reference's position between earlier vintage Submariners and contemporary models.

The long production period adds another dimension to the reference. An early 16610 and a watch produced near the end of the run can show differences in dial markings and luminous material, which means the production period of an individual watch can be particularly relevant when considering a pre owned piece.

There is also an important variation within the 16610 family. In 2003, Rolex marked the Submariner's 50th anniversary with reference 16610LV, manufactured from 904L steel with a black lacquer dial and, for the first time in the collection, a green anodised aluminium bezel insert. This is the version collectors commonly call the “Kermit”. Rolex's own history confirms the anniversary introduction and green bezel specification.
