The Rolex Deepsea 126660 was launched in 2018 to replace the earlier 116660, which had been around for almost a decade. Instead of reinventing the wheel with a new design for the watch, Rolex made efforts to improve the mechanics and comfort of the watch without altering the identity of the Deepsea as one of the best diving watches ever made.
Some features included in this reference of the Deepsea were the new Calibre 3235 and bracelet with a wider design, thus adding to the balance of the watch despite its large size. The production of this reference was continued until the launch of the new Deepsea range.
Defining Features
The design behind the Deepsea 126660 was directed by one goal in mind: to perform in conditions that ordinary diving watches cannot withstand. The 44mm Oystersteel case is built using Rolex's Ringlock System, a patented technique that enables it to survive severe pressure at extraordinary depths in the ocean. Paired with a 5.5mm thick sapphire crystal and titanium back, the timepiece holds remarkable water resistance of 3,900m (12,800 feet).
The main difference of Deepsea compared to the Sea Dweller is that this watch was made for saturated diving. The helium escape valve allows getting rid of helium inside the watch during decompression and preventing it from breaking down after being exposed for a long time in diving chambers.
The 126660 is equipped with the new Rolex Calibre 3235 which is a new updated movement that changed the old clockmaker’s 3135. The newest movement has the Chronergy escapement, extended resistance to shock, and the power reserve of 70 hours greatly reduced downtime while being made in accordance with the Rolex Superlative Chronometer standards.
Rolex has redesigned the Oyster bracelet for this reference as well. With the slightly wider bracelet, the 44mm case looks much more visually balanced and features the Glidelock system of precise micro adjustment. Moreover, this bracelet model features the Fliplock mechanism of bracelet extension which allows the bracelet to increase in length for 26mm, thus making it possible to wear the watch over professional diving gear.
The 126660 reference is manufactured both with the classic black dial and black Cerachrom bezel and with the D Blue “James Cameron” dial, the latter being made specially to commemorate James Cameron's dive into Mariana Trench. Both models have identical technical characteristics.
