Model Reference
Rolex introduced the Sea Dweller 126600 model in 2017 - which was exactly 50 years after the Sea Dweller family range first went into production for professional saturation diving purposes. Instead of just releasing another ordinary version, Rolex chose this reference number as an opportunity to make some alterations in the Sea Dweller that had not been present in any previous model made from stainless steel before. The enlarged case, the new generation movement and the presence of the historic feature in the dial design made the 126600 immediately identifiable.
The Sea Dweller is designed for usage in places where regular dive watches exceed the limit of their capabilities, and the 126600 is no exception. Firstly, the case size of the new model increased to 43 mm, which is the biggest size in the entire line of regular Sea Dwellers. Secondly, Rolex made the opening of the dial larger than on 40 mm models and even modified the Oyster bracelet, making it wider so the overall appearance of the watch was proportional.
One of the main changes in the 126600 watch is located right above the date display. For the first time in the Sea Dweller series, Rolex introduced the Cyclops magnifying lens, thus enhancing the date legibility without reducing the water resistance of the watch to 1,220 metres (4,000 feet). In addition, the dial has another element connecting the watch with the past. Namely, the text "Sea Dweller" is printed in red like on the very first models created in the late 1960s.
Inside the watch case is the Rolex Calibre 3235, which is an automatic mechanism featuring a Chronergy escapement, a blue Parachrom hairspring, and a power reserve of around 70 hours. This watch has been precisely set according to Rolex’s Superlative Chronometer certification which is what makes the movement so reliable in terms of its timing and servicing. The watch has all the characteristic engineering elements of the Sea Dweller collection. The watch comes with a helium valve that surfaces after a saturation dive and opens the way for excess helium inside it, while the oyster type bracelet combines Glidelock and Fliplock technologies to enable easy length adjustment of the bracelet.
Few modern Rolex references changed perceptions of a collection as much as the 126600. For decades, the Rolex Sea Dweller had remained visually distinct from the Submariner through the absence of a Cyclops lens and its consistent 40mm case. Rolex challenged both expectations with this reference by increasing the diameter to 43mm and introducing the magnified date display for the first time.
The changes were not purely cosmetic. The increase in size of the watch meant that more dial space was left for the new Calibre 3235 watch movement technology. Adding back the red lettering of the model name also brought back a distinguishing feature of earlier Sea Dweller watches.
In the Professional collection of Rolex watches, the 126600 fits in between the Submariner and the Deepsea models. It is designed with superior diving capabilities as compared to the Submariner but is smaller in size than the Deepsea, which allows the model to have its uniqueness, rather than trying to compete against either of the two other models.
