Rolex Day Date 118206, from the six digit generation of Day Date 36 family, was introduced in early 2000s, contrary to the misconception that it was first introduced in the middle of 2000s. The reference existed until the middle of 2010s, and earliest known examples were produced in 2000-2001.
What makes the reference very interesting from the perspective of Day Date history is its unique combination of old-fashioned 36mm size and restrained use of platinum. Unlike many other Day Dates, the reference does not utilize the fluted bezel, typical for most of these watches, and instead uses a smooth bezel in platinum.
Defining Features
Platinum is more than just an accent on the 118206. It is the material for the 36mm case, the bezel and the President bracelet, giving the watch a monochromatic look that could be understated even though made entirely of precious metal. The bracelet features the recognizable semi-circular three link design used in the Day Date, whereas the sapphire crystal covers the dial, with the Cyclops magnifying the date located at the 3 o'clock position.
The automatic movement used inside is the Rolex Calibre 3155 that powers the hour, minute and seconds hands in addition to the dual calendar features of the Day Date, including the date at the 3 o'clock position and the days of the week indicated in full words at the 12 o'clock position.
