THE ROLEX 116900 AIR-KING WATCH

In 2016, Rolex launched its Air King 116900, reviving the Air King after two years of absence from the company’s catalog. Instead of giving the old 34 millimeter models a makeover, Rolex took the chance to give the collection a more modern touch by introducing a bigger case, a different dial design, and new technology again used in other Professional watches.
The reference remained in production until 2022, when it was replaced by the Rolex Air King 126900. The 116900 is considered the first contemporary 40 millimeter Air King and has marked a new chapter in its history.
Defining Features
The Rolex 116900 boasts a 40mm Oystersteel casing with lustrous case sides, polished bezel and a strong Oyster bracelet featuring an Oyster clasp and Easylink comfort extension. The bigger case has made the Air King appear significantly different when compared with previous versions which were typically designed in smaller dimensions.
The watch has a dial which is one of the most famous designs in Rolex watchmaking. The black surface pairs large 3, 6 and 9 digits with a large minute scale where numbers appear at five minute intervals. The watch is colored with the help of the green logo of Rolex along with a yellow crown and this combination does not affect visibility and readability. The Mercedes hand and luminous hour and minute hands do the job when it comes to making it visible even during night time.
The watch functions on the Rolex Caliber 3131 that has got an automatic manufacturing mechanism which operates at 28800 turns and provides enough power reserve of nearly 48 hours. In addition, the mechanism has the Parachrom hairspring which is highly resistant to magnetic fields and changes of temperature that makes Rolex watches long lasting, with the option of even using the watch during the most rough conditions. Like other Oyster models, the 116900 is fitted with a Twinlock screw down crown and offers 100 metres (330 feet) of water resistance.

The 116900 was created based on the long time relationship between Rolex and aviation but presented a completely new look to the Rolex Air King line that differed from all the other references in the series. Its dial has been inspired by cockpit instruments, putting more attention on minutes passed compared to earlier versions of the line. Despite different opinions about the design of the dial from the moment of the watch's release, this reference became unique in the Rolex line and did not copy the style of any earlier Air Kings.
Moreover, this watch became the only Air King reference that had a 40mm Oyster case combined with Calibre 3131 until the creation of 126900. After being discontinued in 2022, the 116900 remains the original Air King of the modern era that revived the line.
