It was introduced in 2000, the Rolex Daytona Ref. 116520 marked the start of a new era in the history of the Daytona lineup. It had a similar look but offered one technological innovation that had a major impact on the history of the line after the introduction of the automatic Daytona.
The Rolex Daytona model Ref. 116520 was in production until 2016, after which the watch model was succeeded by the Rolex Daytona 116500. This is the latest watch in the line to have the polished steel tachymeter and also the only watch to have the manufacture chronograph in Rolex.
Defining Features
This model features new technology which became a hallmark for future Daytona reference models, while keeping the Daytona design features intact. Its case is a 40mm Oystersteel Oyster, designed with durability and robustness. The chronograph pushers and screw down crown make the watch waterproof, enabling it to withstand immersion of up to 100m deep.
In contrast to later stainless steel Daytona references, the Rolex 116520 included a fixed stainless steel tachymeter bezel. It enables measuring average speed during the predetermined course while maintaining the classic look of Daytona watches.
Two versions of the watch face were offered, black and white. They both included three recessed chronograph subdials with applied hour markers and luminous hands. The layout of the dial was changed in relation to a new movement.
The movement behind the timepiece is the Rolex Calibre 4130, the first ever self-winding Rolex chronograph in house movement made by Rolex. Built with a column wheel and vertical clutch, the movement provides accurate chronograph functionality but with fewer parts than many other common chronograph movements. It beats at a rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4Hz) and has a 72 hour power reserve.
The reference is completed by the solid link Oyster bracelet, secured by an Oysterlock folding safety clasp. Together with the Oyster case, it provides the robust construction expected from one of Rolex's flagship professional watches.
About Rolex Daytona Model Number 116520
The 116520 is considered by many watch enthusiasts to be the most technologically groundbreaking Rolex Daytona reference as it featured the Calibre 4130 which marked the end of Zenith modified movements within the Cosmograph line. This movement was specially designed for this particular collection and provided Rolex with full control over the manufacture and service of its chronograph.
Rolex 116520 was also the end of the stainless steel Daytona. When the 116500 model was introduced in 2016 the polished steel tachymeter bezel was replaced with the Cerachrom one. This change made the Rolex 116520 the stainless steel Daytona with that specific traditional feature. It is worth noting that Rolex made a number of specification changes to this watch throughout its 16 years in production.
