Does Rolex Own Tudor?

The Shared History (and Ownership) of Two of the World's Finest Watchmakers

Rolex and Tudor are two of the most well-respected luxury watch brands in the world. Many people may be unaware that the two brands have a lot in common, specifically due to their shared history. But how are these two watch-making giants intertwined? Does Rolex own Tudor? Are they still linked to the same degree as before?

We’ll explain all the details in today’s BQ Watches blog. Read on to learn more.

Is Tudor Owned By Rolex?

First, let’s talk about Tudor’s ownership situation. The Geneva, Switzerland-based company was actually founded by Hans Wilsdorf in 1926. Watch history buffs will recognize Wilsdorf as the founder of Rolex. Wilsdorf founded Tudor as a separate sister company, meant to market to a different demographic back when Tudor was first opened.

Today, both companies are owned by the Hans Wilsdorf Foundation. So, they remain sister companies to this day.

Are Tudor Watches Made By Rolex?

This is where things get a bit trickier. Since Tudor and Rolex share owners, are Tudor watches made in Rolex manufacturing facilities? There actually isn’t a definitive answer to that question. Since Rolex and Tudor are owned by the same company, it’s likely that they share resources. This means they could share manufacturing facilities, watchmaking equipment, and possibly even watchmakers.

After its relaunch, Tudor did begin to make in-house movements, so it’s unlikely that these are made directly by Rolex. In the past, when Tudor was first founded, it seems likely that Tudor would have used Rolex facilities to a greater extent. Regardless of where, when, and how Tudor watches are constructed, you can trust that they’re made with quality and care. Being associated with the most popular watch brand in the world isn’t the worst thing, and you can always trust Rolex to go through great lengths to provide customers with the best possible product. Naturally, you can expect the same from its sister company.

A Brief History of Tudor and Rolex

Now, let’s dive into how Tudor came to be. As mentioned, Tudor was founded back in 1926 by Hans Wilsdorf. Wilsdorf noticed that there was a demand for a more affordable alternative to Rolex watches. While everyone wants a Rolex, it’s not always financially possible for someone to purchase one outright. Thus, Tudor was born.

Tudor used the legendary Rolex Oyster case in construction of its early watches, giving customers the robust quality of a Rolex without the high price point. This kept Tudor under Rolex’s shadow for some time, as it was well-known that it was Rolex’s sister company and was considered a cheaper alternative.

However, Tudor did a global relaunch in 2009 and made an attempt to set itself apart from its sister company. It could be said that Tudor accomplished this goal, as Tudor watches are now sought out by collectors and the brand is widely considered to be a respectable and top-quality luxury brand. Tudor also reintroduced its watches to the United States in 2013 after ceasing American sales in the early 2000s.

Now, Tudor is carving its own path. Tudor now creates in-house movements, introduces unique and coveted models like the Black Bay and continues to show that its worthy of the same level of respect that Rolex commands.
