Why You Should Buy a Pre-Owned Hublot

When compared to the other iconic brands in the luxury watch industry, Swiss watchmaker Hublot are relative newcomers.

Now based in Nyon, Hublot was founded in 1980 by Italian watch entrepreneur Carlo Crocco, who envisioned a watchmaker that could combine elegant Italian design with robust Swiss craftsmanship.

A few months after the brand had been established, the “Fusion” concept, which continues to embody Hublot’s key principles to this very day, was born.

Hublot watches display a fusion of materials, both natural and synthetic, such as carbon fibre, waterproof rubber and fine ceramics. They also fuse traditional and modern design, and the brand has become renowned for their combination of extravagant aesthetics and classic, reliable timekeeping. While using a combination of materials and design cues is not unique to Hublot, it is safe to say that no other watchmaker can pull it off quite so seamlessly.

The brand was shaking up the watch industry with their very first timepiece, which was simply named the “Hublot” and released at Baselworld 1980, as it was the first luxury watch presented with a natural rubber strap. The Hublot was met with unanimous critical and instant commercial acclaim, and it could be found on the wrists of royals around Europe, including the Kings of Spain, Sweden and Greece.

Despite the initial success enjoyed by Hublot, later modifications such as the introduction of a white dial and failing mechanical movements soon resulted in a decline in their popularity, and it looked like the brand had lost their inventive spark.

Jean-Claude Biver, who now acts as the CEO for TAG Heuer, was installed as Hublot’s CEO in 2004 with the aim of revitalising the brand and reinvigorating their creative spirit.

The flagship Big Bang collection was released just one year later, winning numerous horological awards while reintroducing Hublot’s fusion concept to the forefront of the watchmaking industry. Steel, ceramic, and rubber were all utilised on the Big Bang, a watch that would also go on to influence the movement towards larger watches with bigger dials and case sizes in luxury timepiece aficionados.

The continued success under the leadership of Biver led to Hublot being acquired by the LVMH luxury goods firm, after which other instant classics were added to the brand’s repertoire of luxury watches, including the Hublot King Power and the Hublot Classic Fusion.
